Montreal’s Winter Gloves announce western leg of North American tour. The band’s new album All Red available today.

Toronto — Montreal’s Winter Gloves’ fantastic new album All Red is available today from Paper Bag Records on CD, digital download and limited-edition red vinyl. The band are also pleased to announce the remaining western dates on their previously announced North American tour (dates below). “Plastic Slides” is still available for download in its original form along with a new remix of the track from Teen Daze (link below).

All Red is Winter Gloves’ sophomore release on Paper Bag Records, a collection of ten songs that the band had been tinkering with on and off-stage during their past year on the road, and brought back to their Montreal studio to record over the past winter. In a return to the roots of the original EP that first introduced Winter Gloves’ poppy mix of gritty bass and synths sound, All Red was produced by the band’s Charles F (lead singer, guitar, synths). The foursome is rounded out with Patrick Sayers on drums, Vincent Chalifour on bass and synths, and Nico Ormiston on guitar and bringing back the glockenspiel that was a well-mentioned highlight on their debut about a girl album.

With only a handful of live shows behind them at the beginning of 2008, Winter Gloves were already receiving invitations to join bands like Tokyo Police Club on a series of sold-out tour dates. Such well-attended shows helped spread what was becoming the wildfire of the earlier, self-released “Let Me Drive” EP. After the Canadian release of their full-length in the Fall of 2008, the band continued on the same foot as things had started with dates alongside Tokyo Police Club and a slot at Toronto’s Virgin Festival before hitting the road across Canada with You Say Party, Thunderheist and Beast. Reactions to the debut album and these shows immediately secured showcase opportunities at International conferences, invitations for further touring and earned spots on “Best of 2008” year end lists including “Best New Artist” from iTunes Canada.

“All Red defies the boundaries of run-of-the-mill electro-pop with its sophisticated arrangements and clever lyrics. And with only three songs reaching the three-minute mark, Winter Gloves’ preference for the short and sweet is apparent. Wisely, they always leave us wanting more.” – EYE Weekly

“All Red is a fantastic follow-up that shows that time has not slowed down this Montreal band in the least.” – Grayowl Point

“The Montreal quartet achieved their goals with this album, so let a little dance out in celebration.” – Exclaim!

Atari Teenage Riot Signs to Dim Mak Set to Tour North America This Fall Releasing Free Mp3 + Video of “Activate!”

“Founded in Berlin in 1992 as a riposte to their nation’s increasingly neo-nazi influenced techno scene, the reformed Atari Teenage Riot are a reminder of how pop can scare the bejesus out of the thick and the bigoted when it’s done fast, smart and furious as fuck.”
– NME

“It’s rare in a world now ruled by Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber to hear music that is so angry with itself and with everything else around it. But ATR’s overwhelming energy is difficult to deny, and difficult not to admire — preferably from a safe distance.”
– Spin Magazine

After reuniting this past Spring, Alec Empire and Nic Endo (aka Atari Teenage Riot) signed on to Dim Mak. This time they’re joined by ATR newcomer (and Kanye West / Nine Inch Nails collaborator) MC CX Kidtronik. They are a natural fit with Dim Mak, as label-head Steve Aoki is known for his hard electro sound and has roots in the hardcore scene. Check out “Activate!”, here.

Atari Teenage Riot is known for their intense live show, and it’s been reinvigorated by the reunion. Check out the cinematic montage of furious industrial, rave-rock chaos in the video for “Activate!”, directed by Zan Lyons, here. Watch for the crowd’s reaction as they invade the stage during ATR’s reunion at Fusion 2010, here. Want to be part of the action? Atari Teenage Riot will be heading on tour throughout North America this fall with Autoerotique. For dates and cities, please see below.

Atari Teenage Riot was the first to blend noise with electronic, usually performaing music that was too offensive or loud for the mainstream. Their lyrics were intensely politcal, leading to their albums being censored in Germany throughout their career. In the late 90s Atari Teenage Riot emerged out of the electronica genre, to subvert all rules of rock and techno music. The original conception was Alec Empire’s and when joined by Hanin Elias, Nic Endo and Carl Crack on stage, the mixed race, mixed sex image of the band provoked people before they even heard the music.

Both the video for “Frozen Zoo” and the first video previously released for the song “The Skin Surf” were directed by Behn Fannin (The Melvins, Nurses).

Have Tera Melos gone pop? Well, no….but yes. Much like the band’s intricate and complex song structures, it’s not quite that simple. Tera Melos’ songs have traditionally been densely packed with so many wild shifts of time signature and chord structures that guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Nick Reinhart jokes they were sounds that, “only wizards could decipher.”

Patagonian Rats is packed with melodic hooks and jabs that on paper might seem to defy the band’s experimental edge. There’s even clear and distinct vocals throughout — a first for the band, where vocals, if any, were previously awash with distortion and layered in the mix. But, particulars aside, Patagonian Rats is the type of album that sticks with you.

Occasionally, “pop” music has really meant daring music. Like the Beach Boys in the late 60s, The Clash in the 70s, Devo in the 80s, Flaming Lips in the 90s — the greatest artists have dared to make music that is hooky while also being groundbreaking. Patagonian Rats evokes images of bizarre and fantastic alternate realities. Think about the first time you heard “Good Vibrations” by the Beach Boys; jarring collisions of a cappella harmonies, tremolo-washed bass and chirping theremin. The key is not to understand it, but to let the music transform everyday reality into something new. And, that is the essence of Patagonian Rats.

Tera Melos formed in 2004 as a quartet, releasing their first self-titled disc in 2005 (later re-released by Sargent House in 2008). The band became a trio in late 2006, releasing the all-instrumental Drugs to the Dear Youth EP early the following year. A split disc with By The End of Tonight (2007) on Temporary Residence and an EP of cover songs, Idioms, Vol 1 followed in 2009. In the meantime, Reinhart collaborated with prolific drummer Zach Hill under the band name bygones, releasing the by- album in 2009 and Spiritual Bankruptcy EP in 2010, both on Sargent House. Clardy has also recently spent downtime as the touring drummer with guitar goddess Marnie Stern.

Patagonian Rats is available everywhere via Sargent House on September 7th, 2010.

“Hard ear candy for your soft inner child.” — Audra Schroeder, Austin Chronicle

Austin, Texas’ wild and brassy quintet Bee vs. Moth has released its latest album, Acronyms this week on CD and digital download. U.S. tour dates have also been released (see below) kicking off in late September.

Bee vs. Moth exists somewhere between Tom Waits’ rumpled New Orleans jazz and a maniacal Beirut gone instrumental: the melodies are strong and boisterous yet the music is subtle and clever. The band has one foot in the world of jazz and creative improvisation, and the other firmly planted on a distortion pedal. With surprising instrumentation, innovative songwriting, quirky melodies, and a healthy sense humor, Bee vs. Moth plays music that defies traditional categories.

Bassist Philip Moody and drummer Sarah Norris started Bee vs. Moth with a pile of odd music they wrote together, and in 2004 began performing around Austin. The band has since grown into a five-piece ensemble with ambitious arrangements featured in film and television scores, original videos, and live shows in Austin and throughout the country. Bee vs. Moth’s second studio album, Acronyms, will be released in September 2010. The record follows the band’s 2007 debut, Soundhorn, and 2009′s Turkey Sandwiches, a free online release of recordings made live on tour.

Bee vs. Moth’s upcoming calendar is full of new projects. A fall Midwestern tour follows on the heels of the record release. Live action and animated music videos directed by Stephen Floyd and Jessica Dreesen will feature tracks from Acronyms. Two of the band’s songs are featured in the 2010 season of the PBS series Roadtrip Nation. In conjunction with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the band will write and perform an original score for the 1928 Buster Keaton classic, The Cameraman.

Bee vs. Moth’s musical family is a big one. Band members perform and collaborate with Austin projects Benko, The Invincible Czars, My Education, Flying Balalaika Brothers, New Music Co-op, Golden Hornet Project, and others. In 2011, Bee vs. Moth will re-imagine the symphonic masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition and score this Mussorgsky / Ravel classic for a double band with The Invincible Czars.<br

BETTIE SERVEERT TO TOUR NORTH AMERICA IN SUPPORT OF NEW RECORD PHARMACY OF LOVE

Bettie Serveert are heading out on a rare North American tour this fall in support of their most well-received record in many years, Pharmacy of Love, released by Second Motion Records in the U.S. and by Sound of Pop in Canada. The tour comes on the heels of praise for the record, with Blurt applauding Carol Van Dyk’s “sauve-but-take-no-bullshit voice” and Venus Zine calling the music the “perfect setting for lyrics that examine the anguish and vagaries of life, and the monsters and villains that haunt us.”

With the band employing a “back to basics” approach, Pharmacy of Love captures the kind of raw, contagious energy that has long characterized Bettie Serveert’s live shows. Recorded in a Belgian recording studio, founding members Carol van Dyk (vocals/guitar), Peter Visser (guitar) and Herman Bunskoeke (bass) were joined on the new album by special guest Joppe Molenaar (of the Dutch band Voicst) on drums. “It’s the blow upon a bruise,” sings van Dyk on “Love Lee,” and the phrase perfectly describes Bettie Serveert’s proclivity for cloaking the starkest emotions with verve and aplomb. From the urgent “Deny All” to the anguished album closer, “What They Call Love,” Pharmacy of Love is a masterful collection of songs that are by turns raucous, shimmering and shiver-inducing as they examine the unpredictability of life and love. You can check out the video for “Deny All” at:

http://www.bettieserveert.com/media/vc_denyall.html

Bettie Serveert released its debut album, Palomine, in 1992. Signed to Matador Records in the States, the band was championed by critics and quickly became a favorite at college radio with singles “Tom Boy” and “Kid’s Allright” getting substantial airplay. Lamprey, which Melody Maker praised for having the most tangled, desolate, real life guitar sound of the year, was released in 1995, followed by 1997′s Dust Bunnies, which the band recorded in Woodstock, NY with producer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Lemonheads). The band toured extensively, opening for bands such as Belly, Dinosaur Jr, Buffalo Tom, Superchunk, Jeff Buckley, Wilco and Counting Crows. After its 1998 live album of Velvet Underground covers, Bettie Serveert Plays Venus in Furs and Other Velvet Underground Songs, the band released a string of studio albums – Private Suit, Log 22 and Attagirl – on its own label, Palomine Records. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, Bettie Serveert released Bare Stripped Naked in 2006. A semi-acoustic CD/DVD package of primarily new material, it was hailed by allmusic.com as “a rousing and heroic reminder of what a great band they were and continue to be.”
